Walking for Softies

Group Coordinator(s) : Mike TODD

Deputy Coordinator : Vacant (volunteers welcome!)

Meetings: 10.00 a.m. every Wednesday morning in summer; this will change to 2.30 p.m. on Fridays when the weather is cooler.

Number in Group: Usually there are 10-20 people walking together.

Duration: In the region of 2 hours, plus a period for refreshment.

Advance notice: The usual practice is to send an email to all members each week which will include directions of how to get to the meeting point, and booking is through the website. N.B. There are a very few walks where dogs are not allowed; if this is the case details will be included on the email.

Walking terrain: Where it is significant, efforts are made to describe the terrain to be encountered. There are no inclines that are likely to give problems to anyone in moderately good health and fitness.

Temperatures/weather conditions: Occasionally, it is not possible to give a definitive forecast which may delay the final decision as to whether a walk will take place.

Destinations: Walks include:- around the lakes, at St. Jean Pla de Corts, Villeneuve de la Raho and Palau del Vidre; the seafronts at Argeles & Racou, Port Vendres, Roses, Sant Marti and St. Cyprien;
exploring Argeles, Ceret, Laroque; countryside walks near St Genis des Fontaines, Fourques.

Walks in Spain have an earlier start time and generally include a restaurant lunch which will extend that day’s event.

Members and guests are advised that they take personal responsibility for their own health and welfare whilst participating in U3A organised events. If necessary, this might, for instance, entail a doctor’s assessment of the level of fitness and/or adequate insurance cover. It is also worth taking into account that walkers may occasionally venture to areas where there is little or no mobile telephone signal making it difficult to summon professional assistance quickly.

Members’ guests are welcome to accompany the group for a payment of €2 temporary membership fee; this amount should be paid to the co-ordinator who will pass it on to a committee member.
