Meetings: We usually meet every four weeks on a Thursday, starting at 7 p.m. prompt.
Venue : Les Abeilles Bar et Restaurant, 1 Rue du Boulodrome, 66490 Saint Jean Pla de Corts. where we have exclusive use of the restaurant, or the first floor function room. Ample car parking space is available close by. The quiz nights normally attract around 60 quizzers.
Quiz format: Teams of four (ideally two ladies and two gents) are randomly selected by the coordinator. Each team appoints a captain. The captain of one of the teams usually becomes the quizmaster for the next quiz but if unable a reserve from a list of volunteers is chosen.
There are no hard and fast rules for compiling quizzes and the quizmaster is at liberty to produce his/her own original quiz. However common practice has been to have 100 questions, split by subject, 40 questions being posed before and 40 after a half-time break, when a light meal is available. The remaining 20 questions are normally completed during the half-time break in the form of a visual quiz (e.g. photographs, dingbats etc.).
The quiz normally finishes between 9.30 and 10 p.m. after the winners have been announced and presented with a much sought after certificate.
Costs: There is a charge of €0.50 per person to cover stationery and printing costs. The mid-session meal is currently priced at €8 per person and there is always a vegetarian option. The full price is payable whether or not the meal is required; this maintains our excellent relationship with the restaurant proprietors, who do provide the venue free of charge.
Communication: Most communication should be done via the U3A website. Shortly after each quiz the results will be published under ”Posts” and then a few days later details of the next quiz will be available under ”Events”.
Bookings for quizzes can only be done during a limited four day period (Friday to Monday inclusive) of the weekend preceding the quiz. Exact details will be given, each month, on the ‘Future Events’ page.
N.B. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 80 and are allocated on receipt of your reply.
Guests: U3A members can invite guests at an additional cost of €2 temporary membership fee per event; guests’ names must be included in the “Comments” box when booking. If guests live in the P.O. they would be
expected to join the U3A if they wish to attend further quizzes.
