The u3a Golf Academy group started in September 2016 to cater for beginners and members who have not played for a long time and want to take up the game again within a fun and relaxed atmosphere with an emphasis on learning and improving our golf skills. Group golf lessons can be organised for those who require them so that members can play with the group on PAR 3 courses in Spain on a weekly basis.
Courses we play on a rotational basis are as follows (to view their website, click on each name):
Gualta. – The Par3 p&p Gualta has 18 holes with distances between 70 and 120 meters and is considered an ideal course for beginners as well as for experts golfers who want to improve their short game and have fun with friends.
On the course there are different areas that will test the skills and abilities of golfers. At the beginning, we find an area of pine and oak trees, with narrow fairways demanding technique and concentration. There are lakes in which the player will find demanding and a challenge. A total distance of 1710 metres.

Price for green fee and menu does not include drinks or coffee. As a member of the u3a PO we get a discount.
Lessons: We can arrange lessons with Richard Jackson, the professional at Gualta – group lessons are currently at a special rate.
Mas Pages – Mas Pagès currently has a par 3 18-hole course approved by and associated with Catalan Golf. The front 9 holes are short but with many tree hazards but the back 9 are longer with beautiful views of the Pyrenees Mountains. A total distance of 1834 metres.
Cost of green fees at Mas Pages is between 16 and 18 euros depending on the season. There is no restaurant but there is a bar that sells great sandwiches etc.
Castello-Empuriabrava – An easier course than the others but with water hazards that many find challenging. A total distance of 1531 metres.

Peralada – 9-hole course with double tee off, with a total distance of 1315 meters, with variations holes between 44 and 108 meters. Built between the golf course and driving range, it is considered flat, without water hazards but significant presence of bunkers. A convenient and enjoyable course, ideal for lovers of short games.
Cost of green fees is around 18 Euros with season variations and there is a restaurant that serves a menu of the day and great snacks with a great view.
Franciac – 18 hole Pitch & Putt course with a total distance of 1597 meters, with variation of holes between 65 and 113 meters. It is a flat course with water hazards and ditches and a few bunkers. A popular course with our members.
Cost of green fees is normally 23.50 euros and this included a 3 course with wine and water in the restaurant.
Pitch and Putt Fornells is set in a quiet setting in the middle of fields and woods, near the river Onyar. It offers exceptional views, such as the Rocacorba and the Far mountains, the Guilleries, the Montseny or the Canigó.
The course was designed by David Bataller Fita, is a newly built field that was opened in April 2003. The state-of-the-art field construction techniques were used in its construction golf and sowing seeds were used which then will need the least irrigation. It has a large central lake and numerous wetlands produced by earthquake. The construction of the field, with the creation of these wetlands, communicated with each other, together with the quality of the seeds sown, has been supervised and approved by the Catalan Water Agency.
It occupies an area of about 10 Ha. of land, distributed with a parking, with a capacity for 150 vehicles, a service area with a house of 70 m2, for reception, administration and shop, a clubhouse of 144 m2, with a snack bar, covered area and enclosed, changing rooms, shower and toilets, and an open terrace of about 50 m2, a driving range with a lighted driving-range of about 100 m. width and 260 m. In length, suitable for all types of golf clubs, a putting-green of about 200 m2 and a playing field, with 18 holes between 58 and 111 meters, with a total length of 1,475 meters.
Cost of greens fees is normally 10 Euros.
Equipment to play Par 3 Courses
There is no need to buy a full set of golf clubs until such time as you wish to do so. All you need for a Par 3 course is cheap bag and clubs for less than a 100 Euros. You can also hire a bag, clubs and trolley to get started at a very reasonable of around 6 euros per round.
Members are welcome to play on a Wednesday or Thursday or both. We welcome any skilled players to play on a Thursday to help mentor the beginners. This is a very economic, fun and exciting introduction into playing golf for new players.
